Cairns

state: Queensland (QLD)

Cairns - small town in northern Queensland which also acts as its unofficial capital. To the east lies one of the world´s natural wonders - the Great Barrier Reef, while to the west the vast green of its tropical forests.

Cairns attracts tourists from all over the world. A sweltering summer heat lasts all year here but the region offers visitors many tourist attractions including: trips to the reef, diving, white-water rafting, canoeing, horse riding and bungee jumping. It is also worth paying a visit to the Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Centre to try playing the didgeridoo, throwing a boomerang or a spear.

The town is a peaceful place and life here is a little bit freer than elsewhere but, for sure, you will not get bored here if you love the night life of clubs and restaurants (the majority of which have air-conditioning!), the later serving specialities from around the world.

Cairns is also an educational centre and a number of university faculties are located here. After lessons students take advantage of the full range entertainment on offer in the town. In fact, it is an ideal place to combine learning and superb ways to spend your free time

The Great Barrier Reef. Stretching for over two thousand kilometres and made up of about three thousand small reefs and one thousand islands it is one of the largest coral reefs on Earth and is on UNESCO´s World Heritage list. The reef is a paradise for scuba divers - where enormous turtles, starfish, rays, multicoloured fish, coral and sea anemones live just under the surface. In order to see everything, however, you don´t even have to go diving, it is enough just to stick your head under the water!

The tropical forests. The vast greenery makes up around one third of all the world´s forests. However, in three regions in particular does the ideal conditions of such high temperatures and abundant rain exist: the Amazon and Orinoco basin, the Congo basin and northeast Australia. One of the main tourist attractions of the forests is the railway journey near Cairns over rivers full of crocodiles and past fifty metre high trees!

The Whitsundays Islands and Queensland. An area made up of twenty-four tropical islands with secluded beaches surrounded by wonderfully calm, crystal clear water and dense rain forest. It all adds up to one of the most beautiful places on Earth. The most famous of the islands are Hamilton Island and Magnetic Island.

Magentic Island. The island is one of the oldest spas in the state of Queensland. Over half the island is covered by a national park with huge granite boulders, tall pines, eucalyptus trees, tropical forest and beaches. The island also offers the chance to go sailing, water skiing, surfing, horse riding and fishing as well as playing tennis and golf or you could just as simply sit in one of the many cafes or restaurants.

Port Douglas. Some 75km from Cairns is a Mecca for film stars and politicians from all round the world because of its beautiful, wide beaches, golf courses and close proximity to the Great Barrier Reef. From Cape Tribulation views of the beautiful rain forests spread out in front of you.

Rezerwat Motyli. Not far from Cairns is Kuranda where more than 1,500 stunning tropical butterflies live in an enormous orangery specially built for them and the conditions they need to thrive. Here you will find many streams, waterfalls, plants and specially selected types of trees. Hundreds of these multi-coloured, fluttering insects mean that is a real delight for visitors.
