Adelaide is the elegant, modern capital of South Australia - a city of a million inhabitants, beautifully located on the Florey peninsula on St. Vincent´s Bay.
The Aborigines refer to the area around today´s Adelaide as the Place of the Red Kangaroo (which you can now see in the National Park). There has been a town here since 1836 based on the visionary project of the architect William Light. The city is divided into northern and southern parts. The northern half is residential while the southern one is commercial.
The Adelaide region is primarily associated with excellent Australian wine - the city has over 300 well-known vineyards near by.
Adelaide is also known as a city of art and culture with many museums and galleries including the Tandaya Museum which houses the largest collection of Aboriginal art. The museums are open seven days a week and entrance is usually free.
In Adelaide you can also see beautifully preserved, colonial buildings (St. Peter´s cathedral) and houses with arcaded verandas.
University of Adelaide was founded in 1874 and is one of the oldest universities in Australia boasting two Noble Prize winners among its graduates. Its exterior recalls those of Oxford.
Cleland National Park lies in the eastern part of Adelaide at the foot of Mount Lofty and is home to emus and red kangaroos. It also has botanic gardens where you can admire camellias and roses.
